Sleeping arrangements on mountains are typically spartan and basic. If you’re not in a tent, you’ll likely spend the night in some form of a hut, a simple unit with a few bunk beds inside. No heat, no electricity… though some regions are starting to offer heat.
The Barrels are an iconic destination at the foot of Mount Elbrus, a Russian mountain on the western edge of the Caucasus range, and the tallest point in all of Europe. Climbers will spend a few nights acclimatizing in these huts before their summit attempt. We stopped here for a tour before trekking farther north, to our less colorful camp.
